How to use R-20 Primer Paste

How to use R-20 Primer Paste

Hair in place. Nothing overdone. Build direction first, then decide whether your style needs anything else.

R-20 Primer Paste is Step 2 of the Redline R-Series. It is a medium-hold, matte pre-styler designed to give your hair a foundation while you shape it. Use it on its own when you want flexible, natural-looking control, or make it the first styling layer before adding stronger structure or texture.

The key is to start small. R-20 should help your hair move in the direction you want without making it feel overloaded.

01 / Start with clean, towel-dried hair

R-20 works especially well as a pre-styler when the hair is damp but no longer dripping wet.

After washing, towel-dry your hair thoroughly. Starting with clean hair gives you a predictable foundation and prevents fresh styling product from being layered over excess oil or yesterday's buildup.

Begin with a small amount of R-20. You can always add more after you see how your hair responds.

02 / Spread it evenly

Work the Primer Paste between your palms before applying it.

Distribute it through the hair from the roots toward the ends rather than concentrating everything in one area. Even distribution gives you more consistent control and helps prevent sections of the style from feeling heavier than others.

Spend a little extra time working the product through before deciding that you need more.

03 / Build direction while the hair dries

Now decide how controlled you want the finished style to look.

Use your fingers while blow-drying for a looser, more natural result. Lift and guide the hair in the general direction you want it to sit.

For more deliberate shape and direction, use a brush or comb while blow-drying.

R-20 provides the foundation while the hair dries, making it easier to establish the basic shape before you move on to a finishing product.

04 / Stop and look at the result

Once your hair is dry and shaped, assess what you actually need.

You may already be finished.

R-20 can be worn on its own when flexible control and a natural matte finish are enough for the style you want.

If the hair needs stronger structure and definition, follow with R-30 Structure Clay.

If the overall shape is right but certain areas need more lift or dry texture, finish selectively with R-40 Texture Powder.

Do not add another product simply because it is the next step in the system.

Why use a pre-styler?

A lot of styling problems are easier to solve before the hair is completely dry.

Trying to force dry hair into position with a heavy finishing product can require more product than necessary. A pre-styler gives you an opportunity to establish direction while the hair is still being shaped.

R-20 acts as that first layer of control.

Instead of relying entirely on your finishing product to create and hold the hairstyle, you establish the foundation first. The finishing product can then concentrate on the areas that actually need stronger hold, definition or texture.

Can you use R-20 by itself?

Yes.

You do not need to automatically follow R-20 with another styling product.

For relaxed styles, shorter hair or days when you simply want the hair to look controlled without looking heavily styled, R-20 may be enough on its own.

Apply a small amount, shape while drying and stop when the result looks right.

When should you combine R-20 with another product?

Think about what is missing from the finished style.

If you have the direction you want but need stronger structure, add a small amount of R-30 Structure Clay.

If the shape looks good but the roots need more lift or dry texture, add R-40 Texture Powder only where it is needed.

For styles that need both stronger structure and targeted texture, R-20 can provide the foundation before R-30 and R-40 are used selectively.

The objective is not to layer as many products as possible. Each product should solve a different problem.

AVOID THIS MISTAKE

Using too much R-20 before you have fully distributed the first application.

Start small, spread it completely through the hair and style before adding more. More product does not automatically create more control—and too much can make the hair harder to work with.

Common questions

Should I apply R-20 Liquid Clay to wet or dry hair?
For pre-styling, start with clean, towel-dried hair. This lets you establish direction as the hair dries. It can also be used on dry hair when you want additional texture and control.

Do I have to use a blow-dryer?
No. You can allow your hair to air-dry after applying a small amount of R-20. Blow-drying simply gives you more control over the direction, volume and finished shape.

Can I use R-20 without R-30?
Yes. R-20 provides flexible medium hold and a matte finish on its own. Use R-30 afterward when the finished style needs stronger structure or definition.

Can I use R-20 with Texture Powder?
Yes. Establish the shape with R-20 first and allow the hair to dry completely. Then use R-40 Texture Powder selectively where you want additional lift, separation or dry texture.

How much should I use?
Start with a small amount and distribute it completely through the hair. Assess the result before adding more. Hair length, thickness and the style you are creating will determine how much you ultimately need.
