How to use R-40 Texture Powder

How to use R-40 Texture Powder

Flat roots and styles that lose volume do not always need more clay or paste. Sometimes the missing piece is targeted lift and dry texture.

R-40 Texture Powder is Step 4 of the Redline R-Series. It is a lightweight finishing product designed to add lift, separation and matte texture without coating the entire hairstyle.

Use it on its own when you want quick volume, or apply it selectively after R-20 Primer Paste or R-30 Structure Clay when the finished style needs more lift.

01 / Start with completely dry hair

R-40 should be applied to dry hair.

If your hair is damp, let it dry completely before using the powder. Moisture can change how the product distributes and make it harder to control the finished result.

If you are using R-20 Primer Paste first, finish blow-drying before moving on to R-40.

If you are using R-30 Structure Clay, shape the style first and use the powder as the final step.

02 / Start with a small amount

Texture powder is easy to overapply.

Begin with a light application rather than covering the entire head.

You can apply R-40 directly near the roots or dispense a small amount into your palms first.

The goal is to put the product where you need additional lift or texture—not everywhere by default.

03 / Work it into the roots

Use your fingertips to work the powder into the areas that need volume.

Lift the hair away from the scalp as you distribute the product.

This creates separation and helps give flat areas a fuller appearance.

Focus on the roots first. You can work a small amount farther through the hair when you want additional dry texture and definition.

04 / Shape and assess

Once the powder is distributed, use your fingers to shape the hair.

Lift, separate and adjust until the style looks the way you want.

Then stop and assess before adding more.

If one area still looks flat, apply another small amount specifically to that section rather than adding powder across the entire hairstyle.

Why use Texture Powder?

Volume problems are different from hold problems.

If the overall hairstyle is already in place but the roots look flat, adding more clay may make the hair heavier without solving the real issue.

R-40 targets lift and dry texture.

That makes it useful for fine or flat hair, hairstyles that need more separation, and areas that lose volume during the day.

Can you use R-40 by itself?

Yes.

R-40 can be used as a standalone styling product when you want quick volume, texture and a matte finish without a full styling routine.

Apply a small amount to completely dry hair, work it through the roots and shape with your fingers.

For lighter styles, that may be all you need.

When should you use R-20 Primer Paste first?

Use R-20 when the hair needs direction before you add volume.

Apply Primer Paste to towel-dried hair, then blow-dry the hair into its basic shape.

Once it is completely dry, use R-40 in areas that need additional lift or separation.

R-20 establishes the foundation. R-40 adds targeted texture.

When should you combine R-40 with R-30 Structure Clay?

Use R-30 when the hairstyle needs stronger overall structure and R-40 when specific areas need more lift.

Shape the hair with R-30 first.

After the style is in place, apply R-40 selectively at the roots or anywhere you want additional dry texture and separation.

Avoid mixing large amounts of both products throughout the entire hairstyle. Give each one a specific job.

Can you refresh your hair with R-40 during the day?

Yes.

If your hairstyle loses volume, use your fingertips to lift and reshape the hair first.

The powder already in your hair may be enough to restore the texture.

If more lift is needed, add another very small amount only where the style has fallen flat.

AVOID THIS MISTAKE

Applying too much powder at once.

Texture powder works best when it is targeted. Start with a light amount at the roots, work it through thoroughly and add more only where the hair still needs lift.

Common questions

Should I use R-40 Texture Powder on wet or dry hair?
Use it on completely dry hair. Apply it after blow-drying and after any damp-hair pre-styling steps are finished.

How much Texture Powder should I use?
Start with a very light application. Texture powder builds quickly, so it is easier to add more than to correct an overapplication.

Where should I apply it?
Start at the roots where you want additional lift. You can work a small amount through the rest of the hair when you want more separation or dry texture.

Can I use R-40 without another styling product?
Yes. R-40 works well on its own for quick lift, texture and a natural matte finish.

Can I use it with R-20 Primer Paste?
Yes. Use R-20 on towel-dried hair to establish direction, dry the hair completely, then apply R-40 where you want additional lift.

Can I use it with R-30 Structure Clay?
Yes. Style with R-30 first, then use R-40 selectively for additional root lift, separation and dry texture.
