How to use R-30 Structure Clay

How to use R-30 Structure Clay

Strong structure without turning your hair into a helmet. R-30 Structure Clay is built for styles that need more control, definition and lasting shape while maintaining a natural matte finish.

R-30 is Step 3 of the Redline R-Series. It is the primary styling product in the system: use it when your hair needs stronger hold than a pre-styler can provide, or when you want to create deliberate separation, volume and structure.

The key is using enough product to control the hair without unnecessarily coating it.

01 / Start with dry or slightly damp hair

How you apply R-30 changes the finished result.

For the strongest hold and driest matte finish, start with completely dry hair.

For slightly smoother, more flexible control, apply it to hair that is still a little damp.

If you are using R-20 Primer Paste first, establish your shape while blow-drying and allow the hair to dry before moving on to R-30.

02 / Start with a small amount

Scoop out a small amount of Structure Clay.

Do not judge the amount based on how much product fits on your fingertip. R-30 is designed to provide strong control, so a small application can go a long way.

Warm the clay thoroughly between your palms until it is evenly spread across your hands.

This makes it easier to distribute the product instead of depositing a concentrated amount in one section of your hair.

03 / Distribute before you style

Work R-30 evenly through your hair before concentrating on the finished shape.

Start through the middle and back of the hair, then work toward the areas around your hairline. Use your fingers to make sure the product reaches through the style instead of sitting only on the surface.

Once the product is evenly distributed, begin shaping.

This is where you create the separation, volume and definition you want.

04 / Build the style gradually

Use your fingers for a more textured, separated finish or use a comb when you want greater control and cleaner direction.

If one section needs additional hold, add a small amount of product specifically to that area.

You do not need to add another full application to your entire head.

Build gradually until the style has the structure you want.

Why use Structure Clay?

Some hairstyles need more than basic direction.

R-20 Primer Paste can establish a foundation, but R-30 is the product to reach for when the finished style needs stronger structure and definition.

The clay helps create separation between sections of hair while adding enough control to keep the overall shape together.

That makes it particularly useful for textured hairstyles, styles that need volume, and hair that tends to lose its shape as the day goes on.

Can you use R-30 by itself?

Yes.

R-30 does not require another styling product underneath it.

Apply it directly to clean, dry hair when you want a straightforward high-hold styling routine.

For many people, R-30 alone will provide all the structure and texture they need.

The other R-Series products should be added only when they perform a specific job.

When should you use R-20 Primer Paste first?

Use R-20 before R-30 when you want to establish more direction while the hair is drying.

Apply a small amount of Primer Paste to towel-dried hair and blow-dry the hair into its basic shape.

Once the hair is dry, use R-30 to add stronger structure, separation and definition.

Think of R-20 as creating the foundation and R-30 as building the finished style.

When should you add R-40 Texture Powder?

R-40 is useful when the hairstyle already has the structure you want but needs additional lift or dry texture.

Finish styling with R-30 first.

Then apply a small amount of R-40 selectively at the roots or in areas where the hair needs additional volume and separation.

You do not need to cover the entire hairstyle with powder.

How do you restyle R-30 during the day?

R-30 is designed to remain workable enough for adjustments.

If your hair gets pushed out of place, use your fingers to reshape the style rather than immediately adding more product.

Often, the product already in your hair provides enough control to rebuild the shape.

Add additional clay only when the existing product is no longer giving you the structure you need.

AVOID THIS MISTAKE

Applying a large amount of clay all at once because you want stronger hold.

High hold comes from proper distribution and controlled application—not simply using more product. Start small, work it completely through your hair and add more only where additional structure is actually needed.

Common questions

Should I use R-30 Structure Clay on wet or dry hair?
Use it on dry hair for maximum hold, texture and the driest matte finish. Applying it to slightly damp hair creates smoother, more flexible control.

How much Structure Clay should I use?
Start with a small amount and warm it completely between your palms. Distribute it throughout your hair before deciding whether you need more. Hair length, thickness and style will determine the final amount.

Can I use R-30 without R-20 Primer Paste?
Yes. R-30 works as a standalone styling product. Use R-20 first when you want additional direction and control while blow-drying.

Can I combine R-30 with Texture Powder?
Yes. Finish shaping the hair with R-30 first, then use R-40 Texture Powder selectively where you want additional lift, separation or dry texture.

What hair types is R-30 best for?
R-30 is particularly useful for hair that needs stronger control, structure, separation or volume. Start with a smaller amount on fine or thin hair and increase gradually.

How do I wash R-30 out?
Wash thoroughly with shampoo and rinse completely. R-10 Reset Shampoo is designed to help remove styling-product buildup and prepare the hair for your next routine.
